In India healthcare is provided by both Private and Public Sectors. It is the responsibility of the Public Sector to establish healthcare institutions accessible to all sections of the population in all parts of the country, to provide diagnostic and treatment facilities. However, the state has not accepted the responsibility of supplying the entire requirement of drugs to treat all the patients receiving treatment in state-funded institutions. At the levels of Central and State Governments, medicines are supplied free of cost or against token payment to the government employees, and free of cost to the weaker section of the population who avail of the treatment facilities provided by the Government through primary, secondary or tertiary levels of state healthcare institutions. Through different National Programmes for the control of diseases of high morbidity drugs are supplied to effect a cure to all patients who approach the treatment centres established under such programmes.
Information of the pharmaceutical companies has taken from 2003 issue of the Pharmaceutical Guide of India. Since it is not possible to include the products of all the pharmaceutical companies of India care has been taken to highlight the pharmaceutical companies listed with the Bureau of Industrial Costs and Prices which constitute the core of the industry accounting for about 80% of its production. But this policy has not strictly been adhered to and wherever necessary products of other pharmaceutical companies have been used.
